Group Management / SaaS Platform

GroupVitals

Software engineer on a small team · 2013–2018

A group-management SaaS for churches, with member signups, attendance tracking, and engagement reporting synced to Fellowship One. I spent five years on the small team that built it.

GroupVitals is a group-management SaaS for churches: member signups, attendance tracking, and engagement reporting, synced with the church-management systems churches already use. I worked on it from 2013 to 2018 on a small team and helped lay the foundation for most of its codebase and architecture.

What I built

  • Took over the Fellowship One API integrations, pulling and pushing data across all of their available APIs.
  • Helped build Stripe subscriptions priced by the number of groups a church had.
  • Built the data migration that moved customers' data over from GroupForms, the earlier CodeIgniter product.
  • Built background queue workers on Beanstalkd and Supervisor for email and other jobs.
  • Introduced continuous integration with Codeship, code reviews, and PHPUnit tests to cut down on production bugs.
  • Refactored much of the code toward repositories, gateways, and factories with dependency injection, so it was easier to test.
  • Set up error alerting, S3 backups, and a Homestead dev environment, and ran the servers on DigitalOcean with nginx.

When the team got smaller, I also took on user support.
